Ballast:

A device intended to stabilize the amount of current in an electric circuit.

Ballast::

A device used with an electric-discharged lamp to obtain the necessary circuit conditions (voltage, current and wave form) for starting and operating; all fluorescent and HID light sources require a ballast for proper operation.

Candela:, (cd): the unit of measure indicating the luminous intensity (candlepower) of a light source in a specific direction; any given light source will have many different intensities, depending upon the direction considered.
Light pollution: also known as photo pollution or luminous pollution, is excessive or obtrusive artificial light. Any adverse effect of artificial light including sky glow, glare, light trespass, light clutter, decrease visibility at night and energy waste.
Current: a measure of the flow of electricity, expressed in Amperes (A).

Chromaticity: :

The aspect of color that includes consideration of its dominant wavelength and purity.

Luminary efficiency::

The ration of luminous flux (lumens) emitted by a luminary to that emitted by the lamp or lamps used therein.

Top

Power factor: A measure of the effectiveness with which an electrical device converts volt-amperes to watts; devices with power factors >0.90 are "high power factor" devices.
Luminous flux: The time rate of flow of light. The measure of the total power of light emitted is adjusted to reflect the varying sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths of light.

Top

Illumination: It is the deliberate application of light to achieve some aesthetic or practical effect. It includes use of both artificial light sources such as lamps and natural illumination of interiors from daylight.
Illuminance: Light arriving at a surface, expressed in lumens per unit area; 1 lumen per square foot equals 1 foot-candle, while 1 lumen per square meter equals 1 lux.
Ingress Protection (IP): It classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact and water in electrical enclosures.
Color Rendering Index (IRC): The measure of a light source´s ability to render the color of objects “correctly”, as compared with a reference source with comparable color temperature; the scale peaks at 100.

Top

LED (Light emitting diode) :

A semiconductor diode that converts applied voltage t o light and is used in lamps and digital displays.

Lens: A glass or plastic element used in luminaries to change the direction and control the distribution of light rays.
Lumen: A unit of luminous; the overall light output of a luminous source is measured in lumens.

Luminary:

A light fixture; the complete unit , including lamp, reflector, ballast, socket, wiring, diffuser and housing.

Lux (lx): A unit of illuminance equal to 1 lumen per square meter.

Top

Sustainability: Capable of being continued with minimal long-term effect on the environment.

Top

Correlated Color Temperature (CCT):

A specification of the color appearance of a lamp relating its color to that of a reference sourced heated to a particular temperature, measured in Kelvin (K). it generally measures the “warmth” or “coolness” of light source appearance.
Unit: Kelvin, K.

Top

Watt (W)
A unit of electrical power equal to 1 joule per second.
Useful life: The length of time that a depreciable asset is expected to be usable for the purpose it was acquired. It may or may not correspond with the item´s actual physical life or economic life.
Voltage: A measure of electrical potential, expressed in volts (V).
